The biological process of dying is well-documented. The heart stops; oxygenated blood no longer reaches the brain; within minutes, organized electrical activity in the cerebral cortex ceases. This sequence is measured, repeatable, and not in genuine scientific dispute.

What happens to conscious experience during and after this process is a different question — one that depends on what consciousness is, which remains unsolved.

What the Biology Shows

Dying typically follows a recognizable physiological sequence. Circulation slows or stops. Oxygen delivery to the brain falls. Cellular metabolism begins to fail. The brain's electrical activity — measurable on an EEG — shifts from organized patterns to slower, weaker signals, and eventually to silence.

In many deaths, this process is gradual. In sudden cardiac arrest, the shift from normal function to flatline is faster. In either case, the biological account of death is detailed and well-understood.

What has been less expected — and what has drawn significant scientific attention — is what some studies record in the period immediately around this transition.

Some researchers have recorded organized surges of high-frequency brain activity at or near the moment of cardiac death in some patients — a finding unexpected enough that it prompted serious scientific discussion about whether the dying brain might produce rather than merely lose its final coherent patterns. What this means for experience is genuinely unknown.

The Tier System Applied

Tier 1 — Documented fact: The physiological sequence of dying is well-understood and not in dispute. Some studies — including research examining brain activity in patients near death — have recorded organized surges of electrical activity at or near the moment of cardiac arrest in some individuals. A significant proportion of cardiac-arrest survivors report some form of awareness during the period of clinical death, and this finding is consistent across multiple independent research programs.

Tier 2 — Suggested but contested: The surges of organized brain activity recorded near death may be related to the experiences some survivors report — researchers have proposed this connection, but the specific link between measurable electrical activity and subjective experience remains unestablished. Some researchers argue these surges could be the neurological correlate of the experiences people describe; others are skeptical.

Tier 3 — Speculative: That the surge of activity represents consciousness's final organized self-expression, or that it points toward consciousness persisting beyond measurable brain activity. These interpretations go beyond what the studies establish.

The Brain Activity Findings

Research examining the brains of dying patients has produced findings that surprised investigators. In some comatose and dying patients, periods of organized, high-frequency gamma-wave activity were recorded at or near the moment of cardiac arrest — patterns associated with conscious processing that appeared more organized than the declining activity that preceded them.

Similar patterns had been recorded in animal studies, prompting researchers to investigate whether they appeared in human cases. The findings do not prove that conscious experience is occurring during this period. They establish that the dying brain, in some cases, does not simply dim linearly — it may produce organized activity at the transition point.

This finding is genuinely scientifically interesting and is being actively studied. What it means for the question of experience at death remains an open question.

What Cannot Be Settled by Biology Alone

The biological account of dying tells us what the brain does. It does not, on its own, tell us what experience, if any, corresponds to those events. This is because the relationship between brain activity and subjective experience — the hard problem of consciousness — remains unsolved even in healthy, living people.

If a surge of organized gamma activity in a dying brain produces or corresponds to experience, then the dying process may include a final period of awareness. If the brain's activity produces nothing experiential in its final organized moments, it does not. The biology cannot resolve this on its own.

If Consciousness Is Seeded, Death Stays Open

The Technospermia theory touches the death question from a specific angle: if consciousness is fundamental and seeded rather than merely generated by biological machinery, then the question of what happens at death stays genuinely open rather than definitively closed. The theory doesn't claim consciousness survives death — that remains Tier 3. But it holds that a framework in which mind is more than biology creates more room for the question than a framework in which mind is simply what brains do. What the dying brain does in its final organized moments may matter more than the simple materialist account suggests. Or it may not. The honest position is that we don't know.
